Lucian Despoiu is a self-made entrepreneur and investor who has spent more than twenty-five years building, acquiring and scaling companies across multiple sectors and geographies. One of his defining strengths is as a dealmaker, and he is repeatedly brought into high-stakes situations, deadlocked negotiations or cross-border disputes, being trusted to bring parties to the table and achieve resolutions and commercially successful deals.
He built his first ventures in Romania's early internet economy with no inherited capital or network, and expanded outward from there one market at a time, learning each by operating inside it rather than studying it from a distance. Over the following two decades, he diversified across the Global South, advising and investing in businesses throughout the emerging markets of Southeast Asia, West Africa and Latin America, before consolidating that work into Impactum Group. In 2025, he acquired a majority stake in Atlantico, the French news and opinion publication, extending the group's media interests into Western Europe and acting on his conviction that media is being remade by AI and algorithms deciding what gets seen, funded and trusted.
His focus is the Global South and the companies he believes will define its next chapter. Through Impactum Group, he backs and builds businesses, giving founders three things they rarely find together: capital to scale, operating capability across technology, data and communications, and the connections that open doors across sectors and geographies. He works as closely with the entrepreneurs he backs as with the institutional leaders he advises, and he is a regular voice on where capital, technology and opportunity are moving across emerging markets.
Underneath all of it is a straightforward conviction that the people who change markets are entrepreneurs, and that most of them are held back by a lack of access rather than a lack of ability, unable to reach the capital, the decision-makers or the cross-border opportunities that would let them scale. He has spent his career opening those doors for others, starting with the VIP Business Club student entrepreneurs' association he founded in 1998, which he continues to support.
